二週間ほど前に、Impossible Projects から数量限定で販売された Edge Cut Film SX 70 を使ってみた。このフィルムは、TZ Artistic の製造過程で裁ち落とされた感光シートの端部から作られたものだそうだ。シートの端部は、品質にバラつきがあるため、従来は廃棄処分となっていたのを、撮影結果は無保証という条件付きで、格安に販売されたものである。
Impossible Projects のネットショップでの販売開始からものの20分足らずで完売という人気だったが、何しろワンパック950円という破格の値段だったからだろう。世界中のマニア（というかポラロイド中毒患者）からのアクセス集中でダウンしかかっているサーバーにやっと接続し、「お一人様5パック限り」のフィルムを入手することができた。
パッケージは、通常のTZフィルムのそれに、赤いエンベロープが被さっている。さて、肝心の撮影結果だが．．．
うーむ。何と言うか微妙にArtisticだ。もともとの材料が賞味期限切れということもあって普通のTZよりもさらにくすんだ発色だ。絵画的な印象の描写である。
いかにもTZ的な写りだ。この退色感が何とも言えない味わいだと思う。比較的まともな結果であった。
路地裏の壁。暗かったので、手ぶれしているが、なにより彩度が低い。画面左上の円弧状の物は、実際にはオレンジ色に塗装されたダクトの一部なのだが．．．。
ショーウィンドウの中のディスプレイ。ガラス瓶の中に糸巻きが入っているのだが、ウィンドーのガラスに外の景色が写り込んでいるのと、曇りで光線状態が悪く手ぶれしているのとで、写真というよりは絵のような印象となった。
という訳で、まさしく撮ってみなけりゃ分からないというのが結論であるが、ポラロイドというのは、多かれ少なかれそうしたものだ。復刻フィルムになってからは、その意想外の写りを楽しむという方向に転換しているように思われる。というよりかむしろ、その偶然性の中に面白さを見出すというのが、デジカメや普通の銀塩カメラには真似のできないポラロイドの遊び方なのかもしれない。
この Edge Cut Film SX 70 は、前述のようなキワモノなので、ロットによって写りにも差があるようだ。残りのパッケージが、どのような描写となるのか楽しみである。

These original Polaroid 600 and Polaroid TZ films were put aside during the last production runs of Polaroid's instant film in the factory in Enschede (NL). This was because they were produced from the edges of the used photosensitive materials (positive as well as negative sheet). Due to the very complicated coating process these edge regions have a statistically increased chance of showing some small structural defects. Often the film is in great condition, with unique color tones and moods, but sometimes it might also "surprise" you with a special feature that most of you might describe as a boring red or yellow line or "scratch" crossing your images in an unpredictable way.
For many years these films never saw the day of light and were destroyed before they even had the chance to show the world that also EDGE CUT films can make photographers happy. As we truly think that also this unique patch of slightly handicapped films should get their chance to see the daylight and be transferred into wonderful images, we are happy to offer you a very limited stock of this arbitrary film material for a more than tasty price.
